ART215 Graphic Design

In it’s most basic definition, graphic design is designing with type or writing. The largest part of this semester will be devoted to just that: designing with type. A further definition of graphic design is design for communication. This means that it is not simply design for design’s sake, but an attempt to convey specific meaning.

To explore this conveyance of meaning, the semester will also be devoted to an examination of both the structure of designed elements, or form and the concept of those elements, or the syntax.

Some of the projects will be a revisiting of previous projects, in order to gain more and deeper understanding of the design process. Some will be created entirely by hand, to hopefully remind you that you are, in fact, creating physical objects. All should be approached with a broader sense of purpose.
